I grew up by the beautiful, serene, River Amanzule. My entire village fished for fish, crabs and periwinkle snail from it, we bathed in it, played in it and drank from it. We were refreshed daily from the life that thrived in it.
Unfortunately, unlike me, children in some areas of Ghana have been deprived of this beautiful connection with the bodies of water around them. Below are river bodies and vegetation that have been devastated by the menace of #Galamsey (illegal mining). Foreigners, mostly from China, led on by politically connected Ghanaian nationals and guarded by the Ghana Armed Forces, are devastating virgin forests and contaminating river bodies.
In spite of several media exposes on this, neither the government, the Ghana army nor the political class seems to care. There is no genuine interest to solve this problem. Ghana is on the verge of self destruction, unless something changes dramatically and soon.

Why is the legislation in Ghana not protecting these illegal act?
Ask again Ben. There is no appetite because the very people supposed to enforce these laws are benefiting from the carnage. That is the sorry state of our country. Leadership speaks the right things, but they are heavily involved in the loot.
