Maame (Mother), Elizabeth Allua Vaah’s first book of linked short stories about women in a rural community in the South Western tip of Ghana called Aakonu was launched on Friday, December 11, 2020. The event, in the form of a virtual fireside chat featured the author, Elizabeth Allua Vaah in an engaging conversation with Anna Aidoo, a women’s right advocate at the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario and the founder of Endless Possibilities, a non-profit organization supporting women and girls.
Elizabeth answered questions covering why she chose the village of Aakonu; who the main characters were and what they represent; what excites her about the book Maame; her vision for the book and where people could buy it from.
There were equally engaging questions from the audience which included friends and family in Brampton and across the globe, some of whom stayed up into the wee hours of the day due to time difference, parents and staff of HCPS, including Principal Nica Apa and Vice-Principal Matthew Ng, Elizabeth’s work colleagues, a cross section of guests and fellow author and lecturer, University of Puerto Rico, SanJuan , Prof Dannabang Kuwabong. Hosting the engaging event were Nurjehan Aziz, publisher and co-founder, Mawenzi House Publishers Ltd, publishers of Maame and her able team Crystal Shi (Marketing ) and Sabrina Pignataro (Sales & Operations), in partnership with Knowledge Bookstore, a specialty bookstore in Brampton.
